Characteristics of Tulbaghia

Tulbaghia, also known as Cape garlic, is a versatile and characterful plant that excels благодаря its long flowering period, strong growth, and low maintenance requirements. From late spring well into summer — and often even longer until the first frost — its elegant flowers appear, offering not only visual appeal but also a subtle, aromatic fragrance.

Thanks to its excellent drought tolerance, Tulbaghia is particularly well suited to sunny borders, rock gardens, and modern, climate-resilient gardens. It also performs exceptionally well in pots and containers, where it continues to flower for a long time with minimal care. Regular removal of spent flowers encourages even more abundant blooming.

An additional asset is that Tulbaghia is both aromatic and edible. The leaves and flowers can be used in the kitchen and have a mild, garlic-like flavour — decorative as well as surprisingly tasty.

In short, Tulbaghia is a strong and elegant plant with many qualities, effortlessly combining beauty, ease of use, and sustainability.

Site & conditions

Tulbaghia prefers a sunny to lightly shaded position and performs best in well-drained soil. This makes it ideal for sunny borders, rock gardens, and contemporary, climate-adaptive garden designs. It also thrives in pots and containers, where it serves as an elegant focal point on patios and balconies.

Care & maintenance

This plant requires very little maintenance. Regularly removing spent flowers promotes longer and more abundant flowering. Once established, Tulbaghia needs only limited watering thanks to its drought tolerance. A light application of fertiliser in spring is sufficient to keep the plant healthy and floriferous.

Winter hardiness

Tulbaghia is moderately hardy. In mild winters, it can overwinter outdoors without problems, especially in a sheltered location. In colder regions or during severe frost, we recommend overwintering container-grown plants frost-free or providing additional protection for plants in the ground.

In-house breeding

Recognising the great potential of this climate-adaptive garden plant, we have — just as with our Agapanthus — started breeding Tulbaghia ourselves. The first results are already very promising and confirm our choice for this strong, future-oriented plant.
